KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for increased collaboration between universities and industries to cultivate the talent essential for Malaysia’s expanding semiconductor sector.

He highlighted that while Malaysia’s workforce is renowned for its discipline, academic institutions must adapt to meet the requirements of high-tech industries.

Anwar emphasised that partnerships should go beyond theoretical aspects, with industry professionals contributing to teaching, curriculum development, and student training.

“Industry experts should interact with universities, assess curricula, and offer guidance on skills gaps. Sending professionals to provide initial training and exposure will significantly benefit students and faculty,” he stated during the inauguration of X-FAB Sarawak’s 40K Fab expansion at Sama Jaya High Tech Park today (12th September).

Anwar also stressed the importance of integrating emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and automation, into university programmes to equip students for modern semiconductor production.

“Embracing new technologies with humility will establish a workforce capable of propelling innovation and efficiency in the industry,” he added.

He observed that universities stand to gain from such partnerships by keeping faculty and students abreast of technological advancements, positioning Malaysia to compete globally and enhancing its status as a semiconductor hub.

“It is insufficient for universities and industry to operate in isolation. Strong synergy is crucial,” Anwar remarked, highlighting the federal government’s dedication to initiatives that foster closer ties between academia and industry.

Through these endeavours, he affirmed that Malaysia can cultivate a sustainable ecosystem where education and industry synergize to drive innovation, ensuring enduring growth and competitiveness in the high-tech sector.
