KUCHING: Kuching City FC head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak has warned his players not to underestimate Sabah despite their recent struggles, reminding them that “a derby is still a derby” ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Likas Stadium.

Kuching City are enjoying strong momentum, climbing to fourth in the league with 10 points after back-to-back wins over Selangor, and Immigration FC.

They will now face a Sabah side currently languishing in 10th place with just three points, following a heavy 8-0 defeat to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

But Aidil insisted that form and league standings mean little in derby matches.

“When it comes to these two Borneo teams, they always have great competition. And if we look at history, Sabah have always won more than us. So this is where we try not to repeat that,” he told reporters at a post-match press conference last night (Sept 28).

The coach highlighted the danger of underestimating a wounded opponent.

“We cannot go there and think that Sabah is below us. Because the derby is still a derby. A team is very dangerous when they lose a few games, especially at home. They will be trying to prove something,” he cautioned.

Aidil highlighted the need for focus and discipline, noting that while his side has found rhythm, the season remains long.

“We have to capitalise on our momentum and consistency. But like I said, we cannot get carried away. This league is like a marathon — you cannot finish it in only three games,” he said.

Despite acknowledging areas that still need improvement, Aidil praised his squad’s professionalism.

“The boys understand we cannot relax, we have to keep working. Let’s play good football in Sabah,” he added.

Kuching City will travel to Kota Kinabalu to face Sabah on Saturday (Oct 4) at 8.15 pm, aiming to extend their unbeaten run while ensuring they do not slip into complacency.
