BINTULU: A month of meticulous surveillance paid off when immigration officers swooped in on a house believed to be operating as an online gambling call centre, uncovering a covert hub run by Indonesian nationals.
Coordinated by the Security and Enforcement Monitoring Unit (UPKP), 24 enforcement officers from Bintulu, Sri Aman and Sarikei Immigration Divisions stormed a residential premises suspected to have been used as an online gambling hub that had been operating for about six months.
The operation, which began around 5 am yesterday (Oct 13), resulted in the arrest of 20 Indonesians, including eight women, believed to be directly involved in the illegal activity.
Further checks found that several of them had no valid travel documents, while others had overstayed their permitted passes.
All of them are being detained for offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.
They have been taken to Bintulu Immigration Office for documentation before being sent to the immigration detention depot for further action.
The Sarawak Immigration Department said such an operation reflected their continued commitment to strengthening immigration law enforcement in Sarawak.
