SARAWAK has completed eight major bridge projects as part of its sweeping infrastructure push to improve connectivity across the state, says Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Deputy Premier said the completion of these landmark structures marks a significant milestone under the state’s ongoing bridge construction programme, which aims to link communities, shorten travel time and boost economic development.

“The completed bridges are the Marudi Bridge, Muara Lassa Bridge, Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge, Sungai Lingga Bridge, Batang Kemena (Sebauh) Bridge and Datuk Amar Juma’ani Bridge.

“These bridges are now fully operational and are already bringing tangible benefits to the people,” he told the august House during his ministerial winding-up speech today (Dec 3).

He added that works on the remaining major bridges are progressing as planned, with 10 currently under construction and nine expected to be completed in 2026, while another three are at the pre-contract stage.

Uggah said the state continues to emphasise environmental sustainability in its infrastructure expansion, in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Among the projects adopting advanced and eco-friendly construction approaches are the Second Trunk Road Package A2, which utilises Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), and two elevated road projects in Batang Sadong and Sibu designed to minimise impacts on peat soil.

“These innovative methods not only enhance durability but also reduce environmental disturbance,” he said.

Uggah also highlighted that the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak is concurrently implementing 575 infrastructure projects worth RM4.39 billion under six regional development agencies.

Of the total, 138 projects have been completed, 110 are under construction and 327 are at the pre-contract stage.

“These development agency projects play a crucial role in broadening statewide accessibility and ensuring that rural and urban communities benefit equally from Sarawak’s development agenda,” he said.
