KUCHING: The Band Lab has announced that internationally acclaimed Japanese dance group Avantgardey will headline ‘The ACG Concert’.

This marks the first Borneo appearance for the 17-member troupe, who gained global recognition as finalists on America’s Got Talent and were honoured by Vogue Japan as “Persons of the Year”.

Known for their precisely synchronised performances, distinctive bobbed hairstyles and retro school uniforms, the group has become a viral sensation worldwide.

The event that takes place at Stadium Perpaduan Kuching represents Borneo’s largest full-orchestra Animation, Comics and Games (ACG) live stadium concert, featuring a 60-piece orchestra, professional vocalists, dancers and a full 50-piece choir by Dolce Chanticleer.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, following the immense success of ‘An Anime Symphony’ in 2023 and ‘An ACG Symphony’ in 2024.

The Band Lab (Persatuan Wind Orkestra Kuching) president Jesmond Siew said the event marks a significant evolution in live entertainment for the region.

“Securing Avantgardey is a testament to Kuching’s growing influence as a cultural destination.

“Their precision and eccentricity perfectly mirror the high-octane energy of the ACG culture.”

Siew added that they are not only putting on a show but also facilitating a world-class cultural exchange that brings the best of Japanese contemporary art directly to the heart of Sarawak.

The two-hour concert will feature music from popular anime, including Naruto, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, Studio Ghibli classics such as My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and many more.

Attendees’ experience will also be elevated with the usage of state-of-the-art pyrotechnics and cinematic lighting design.

Organisers are encouraging attendees to participate by wearing cosplay, emphasising that fan involvement is integral to the event’s atmosphere.

“Cosplay is more than just a costume; it’s the soul of the subculture. When they cosplay, they become part of the ‘Beyond Epic’ atmosphere we are creating,” Siew added.

Early bird tickets are available from Dec 31 via Ticket2U at special rates.
