MIRI: Some 161 people from 52 families have been evacuated after flooding inundated several villages in Bekenu following continuous overnight rainfall, prompting authorities to open a temporary relief centre (PPS) yesterday (Jan 4).
The PPS at SMK Bekenu, Subis was activated at 2.30 pm, as rising water levels made homes in low-lying areas unsafe.
Villages affected include Kampung Kawang, Kampung Jengalas, Kampung Rambai, Kampung Pintasan Tiris, Kampung Masjid Tiris, and Kampung Kuala Lajung in Niah.
The Miri Civil Defence Force said the evacuees comprise men, women, children, infants, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, with only those currently staying at the centre recorded in official figures.
Emergency personnel from various agencies and departments have been deployed to manage the situation. No casualties have been reported.
Authorities said conditions at the relief centre remain under control, and weather conditions were reported to be improving as of last night. Monitoring and updates will continue.
