SIBU: Nineteen individuals were rounded up in the Special Integrated Operation ‘Rescuing the Poor and Homeless’ conducted around Sibu town on Friday night (Jan 9).
They consisted of 16 males and three females; seven of them tested positive for methamphetamine.
According to the Administrative Officer of the Sibu Division Resident’s Office, Maria Nadja Jimmy Jalil, the operation was launched to address the problem of the presence of homeless people following recent complaints from the public.
“In addition, we also need to ensure that the town’s image continues to be preserved, especially ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“Tourist attractions such as the Tua Pek Kong Temple have also been affected, thus raising concerns about Sibu’s image as the main tourist gateway to Sarawak.
“We do not want this negative matter to be recorded and spread on social media because it can have a negative impact on the town’s image,” she told reporters present during the operation.
Commenting further, Maria said the operation involved the cooperation of about 80 personnel from various major agencies in Sibu, including the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Social Welfare Department (JKM), Anti-Dadah Agency (AADK), and Health Department.
“Those found guilty of drug abuse will be detained by AADK.
“For those who are homeless, they will be temporarily placed at TTG (Homeless Transit Centre).
“If there are individuals with mental health problems, the hospital will conduct health checks and screenings,” she said.
Meanwhile, some of the individuals detained are also repeat clients at TTG, in addition to new individuals being identified.
“The trend we see shows that they are making Sibu a location to find a source of income. However, because they have no permanent place to stay, they sleep everywhere and this situation is affecting public order,” Maria added.
