KUCHING: A development project costing close to RM1 million to revitalise the Kampung Buntal Medan Niaga and Esplanade is set to provide a boost to local hawkers while enhancing public facilities and the coastal landscape of the village.

In a statement today (Jan 19), Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) said a site visit had been conducted to review the proposed temporary placement area, which will accommodate hawkers to allow development works on the Medan Niaga and Esplanade to proceed.

The site visit was led by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordination for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, together with DBKU deputy director of Infrastructure Services Mohamad Faisal Adenan.

“The development project, valued at nearly RM1 million, comprises two main components — the construction of a multipurpose square and public amenities at Kampung Buntal valued at RM230,000, as well as an open multipurpose hall valued at RM750,000.

“Both projects will accommodate hawkers at Lot 664, ensuring that trading and entrepreneurial activities can continue while paving the way for the implementation of the Kampung Buntal Esplanade project,” the statement added.

The city commission reiterated its continued commitment, together with the Sarawak government, to strengthening the local hawker economy, improving public facilities and enhancing the coastal area of Kampung Buntal for the wellbeing of the local community.
