SIBU: A raging fire razed seven workers’ quarters at Kemuyang landfill site here, leaving the entire cluster of makeshift dwellings completely destroyed yesterday (Jan 19).

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 12.29 pm incident as 14 occupants managed to evacuate to safety.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said firefighters from Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene following a distress call.

“Upon arrival, they confirmed that seven huts, used by garbage collectors as their residence, were beyond saving.

“Extinguishing works were promptly carried out and the fire was brought under control at 1.06 pm and overhaul works followed suit to ensure no risk of reignition,” he said.

Andy stated that firefighting efforts were hampered by several challenges, including the absence of water source, which forced crews to source water from a fire hydrant about 1.5km away.

In addition, the area was also outside Government Integrated Radio Network (GIRN) coverage and experienced poor internet connectivity, affecting communications at the scene.

He pointed out that the cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
