KUCHING: A total of 18 Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd employees and apprentices completed a 10-day attachment programme with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad in Selangor.

The programme involved Sarawak Metro staff and Young Talent Programme apprentices, who were attached to Prasarana’s Learning and Culture Unit and Prasarana Bus Academy.

Sarawak Metro chief executive officer Mazli Mustaffa said such exposure is essential ahead of Autonomous Rapid Transit operations.

“As we gear towards the start of ART services, it is crucial that our employees are fully prepared through hands-on operational experience,” he said.

The Young Talent Programme apprentices are part of Sarawak Metro’s Socio-Economic Enhancement Development Programme, aimed at developing skilled local manpower for the Kuching Urban Transportation System.

Under the programme, apprentices undergo a structured 24-month training period before being absorbed as full-time Sarawak Metro staff upon successful completion.

Of the participants, 11 were attached to Prasarana’s Rapid Rail Ampang Line team to gain exposure to a Grade of Automation 2 rail operating environment.

The remaining participants underwent structured training at the Prasarana Bus Academy, focusing on bus fleet operations, preventive maintenance, depot management and passenger service delivery.

Sarawak Metro said the attachment programme strengthened technical competencies, reinforced a culture of safety and reliability, and enabled benchmarking against established public transport operators.

The programme, held recently, ended with a closing ceremony at Prasarana’s headquarters in Ara Damansara, where certificates were presented by Prasarana’s head of Learning and Development Zaki Mohamad.
