Close call as elderly driver escapes lorry fire

SIBU: An elderly lorry driver cheated death after narrowly escaped a raging fire that engulfed his cement mixer lorry along Jalan Bahagia 3, Teku this afternoon.

The 60-year-old managed to get out in time, just few moments before flames consumed about 90 per cent of the vehicle, averting what could have been a fatal incident.

He was reported to be safe and did not sustain any injuries.

Firefighters from Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene following a distress call at 1.10pm.

Upon arrival, the team conducted the firefighting operation by drawing water from an open source to extinguish the flames.

Once the situation was deemed safe, they ended the operation at 1.55pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still being assessed.
