KUCHING: A routine patrol turned into a tense roadside chase after two local men attempted to flee police, only for officers to uncover suspected burglary and vehicle theft tools hidden inside their car.

Handout photo shows the seized tools believed to be commonly used for housebreaking and vehicle theft.

The incident occurred at around 12.15 am on Saturday (Jan 24) when the district police’s Counter Aggressive Team (CAT), assisted by officers from Sungai Maong Police Station, spotted the suspects along Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli.

Sensing police presence, the duo sped off in a Perodua Viva, triggering a pursuit that ended with their vehicle being stopped at the roadside.

While initial body searches found nothing illegal, a search in the vehicle raised suspicion as they discovered several tools believed to be commonly used for break-in and vehicle theft.

The suspects, aged 28 and 40, were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items.

Both men later tested positive for drugs following urine screening tests.

The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Corrosive Substances and Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 for carrying dangerous weapons in a public place without lawful purpose or permission.
