JULAU: Up to 1,000 households in Pekan Julau and Nanga Luau are set to receive a more stable and reliable water supply with the completion of the Julau Water Supply Package 1 project, which is expected to be operational by next month.
According to a press release from the Julau District Information Office, Meluan assemblyman Datuk Rolland Duat Jubin said the upgraded Julau Water Treatment Plant should begin supplying water to residents as soon as testing and commissioning works are completed.
“I have stressed that the Julau Water Treatment Plant must commence operations as early as March 2026 so that the local community can enjoy a more stable and continuous water supply,” he said during a site visit today.
Officially titled “Proposed Upgrading of Julau Water Treatment Plant, Reservoirs, Pipelines and Associated Works”, the project is designed to meet rising water demand in line with local development and population growth.
Its scope includes the construction of a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 3.4 million litres per day, the building of reservoirs, and the installation of new pipelines linked to the existing distribution system to improve efficiency and supply stability.
Meanwhile, Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Sarikei engineer Ts Chien Ghin Wei said the project also involves upgrading the existing Julau Water Treatment Plant, including the dismantling and relocation of a 3.4-million-litres-per-day package plant and a 0.3ML clean water tank from the Mukah site to Julau.
He added that subsequent works cover the rehabilitation, upgrading, installation, connection, testing and commissioning of the 3.4MLD package plant, as well as a new 1.3ML clean water tank at the Julau facility.
The project further includes the construction of a new 1.3ML clean water tank, upgrading of the existing Julau water supply system, and improvements to chemical storage facilities, raw and treated water pumps, mechanical and electrical equipment, and other related infrastructure.
An existing quarters unit will also be refurbished and converted into an operational office for JBALB, while individual water meters will be installed for each household, with communication pipes connected from the main supply to each meter.
To ensure smooth operations, training will be provided to plant operators, including operation and maintenance manuals, to support efficient and effective management of the facility.
JBALB Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to completing ongoing water supply projects on schedule to ensure a safer, higher-quality and continuous water supply for residents in the Sarikei Division.
Also present at the site visit were Premier of Sarawak’s political secretaries Brian Fung and Paulus Dandee Banyang, Julau district officer Minggu Jampong, department heads, and local community leaders.
