KUCHING: A festive atmosphere filled Plaza Merdeka here as the Reins of Prosperity Celebration Chinese New Year 2026 kicked off with cultural performances, lively bazaar and community activities today.
The celebration took place at the Main Atrium on the ground floor of Plaza Merdeka, with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman attending, arriving at about 2.25 pm.
The programme opened with a cultural performance, followed by an eye-dotting ceremony for seven new lion dance costumes, symbolising the awakening of the lions.
A lion dance performance at about 3.20 pm delighted visitors, with Hilmy watching the festivities up close.
He spent approximately an hour and a half at the venue before departing at around 4 pm.
For the record, the celebration also featured a Chinese New Year bazaar with 10 vendors, offering festive deals, seasonal treats and activities for shoppers and families.


According to Plaza Merdeka statement, customers spending RM188 in up to two combined receipts were eligible to redeem exclusive Plaza Merdeka angpao packets through a lucky draw.

It also said that traditional lion dance performances are scheduled on Feb 7, 19, and 20, going around the mall bringing more energy and good fortune to visitors throughout the Lunar New Year celebrations.
