Sarawak Biodiversity Insights to feature talk on VirCanE Platform by Sarawak-born scientist

KUCHING: The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) will host its upcoming Sarawak Biodiversity Insights session on Feb 23, featuring a talk titled ‘Transforming Discovery into Impact: The VirCanE Platform’ by Dr Siaw Shi Boon.

The session which is scheduled at 2.30pm and will be conducted in hybrid mode, allowing participants to attend either physically at SBC or virtually via Zoom.

Sarawak-born Dr Siaw, who is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK), will share insights into how scientific discoveries made in the laboratory can be translated into practical medical solutions.

As one of Sarawak’s talents making her mark internationally, Dr Siaw’s research focuses on understanding how certain viruses including human papillomavirus (HPV) contribute to cancer development, and how innovative research platforms can accelerate the development of targeted therapies to improve patient outcomes.

During the session, she will introduce the VirCanE (Virus and Cancer Elimination) Platform, an end-to-end research framework that integrates disease biology, artificial intelligence-assisted screening and laboratory validation.

The platform is designed to speed up the discovery and development of treatments for virus-associated cancers.

“The session will also be streamed live on our official Facebook page and attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with Dr Siaw during a live question-and-answer session,” SBC said.

The Sarawak Biodiversity Insights series is part of SBC’s ongoing efforts to promote knowledge-sharing and highlight research developments relevant to Sarawak and beyond.
