SIBU: The spirit of Ramadan was expressed in a warm atmosphere of goodwill when Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee distributed 500 packs of dates and iftar timetables to members of the Muslim community at the Teku Native Market (Pasar Tamu Teku) on Wednesday (Feb 18).

Tiang, who is Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak and Pelawan assemblyman, was joined by staff from the Pelawan Service Centre in reaching out to the local community.

He said the initiative reflected the spirit of togetherness and sharing that has long been practised among Sarawak’s multi-racial and multi-religious communities.

“The harmony enjoyed in Sarawak did not happen by coincidence. It was built on a strong foundation of unity laid by earlier generations since the formation of Sarawak and the establishment of Malaysia in 1963, and it continues to be preserved to this day.

“That is why in Sarawak, we do not see differences in race or religion as dividing lines. Instead, we uphold our shared identity as Sarawakians, which remains the state’s greatest strength,” he told reporters as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).

On the programme in Teku, Tiang described it as the first stop in a series of Ramadan outreach efforts planned within the Pelawan constituency, with similar initiatives set to be carried out at other locations.

He also announced that the annual Bubur Lambuk Programme will continue this year in collaboration with Pertubuhan Belia Kebangsaan Bersatu Sarawak (SABERKAS) and various uniformed bodies.

“The distribution of contributions and Bubur Lambuk is not limited to Muslims alone. It involves people from all walks of life as a symbol of unity and shared joy throughout the fasting month,” he said.
