KUCHING: The Scout Pipe Band of SMK Sacred Heart Sibu set the tone for Sarawak’s participation in the 15th Malaysia Scout Jamboree after leading the state contingent into Penang Football Stadium for the opening ceremony on Aug 29.
The band’s energetic performance drew the attention of the crowd while showcasing the unity and camaraderie of the 182-member Sarawak contingent.
According to a statement, the contingent is led by Assistant Chief Scout Commissioner of Sarawak Azrul Azeem Selamat.
The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister and Prime President of the Scouts Association of Malaysia Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The jamboree, running from Aug 29 to Sept 4, brings together 6,584 Scout leaders and participants from Malaysia and nine other countries — Australia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore.
The Sarawak contingent’s participation reflects the state Scouts’ continued involvement in national youth development programmes, while promoting the values of character-building, leadership, discipline and teamwork.
The jamboree also provides an opportunity for Sarawak Scouts to forge friendships, exchange experiences with participants from across the region and showcase the state’s scouting movement on the national stage.
Also present to lend moral support to the contingent were Sarawak Scout Council deputy president Datuk Mohamad Safri Abdillah and Deputy Chief Scout Commissioner Methodius Macdonald George Segie.
