KUCHING: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has urged the public to limit outdoor activities and wear appropriate face masks when necessary as unhealthy air quality continues to pose health risks.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Aug 29), the ministry outlined seven preventive measures to help reduce exposure to polluted air and protect public health.

Among the recommendations is staying adequately hydrated by drinking sufficient plain water, with at least eight glasses a day suggested to support normal body functions.

The public is also advised to reduce time spent outdoors and limit physical activities in open areas.

For those who must go outside, the ministry encouraged the use of suitable face masks, particularly N95 or P100 masks.

People should also wash their hands and face with soap and clean water after returning from outdoor activities.

At home, the ministry advised the public to maintain good indoor air quality by keeping living spaces clean and using air-conditioning and air purifiers where available.

It also urged households to avoid additional sources of indoor air pollution, particularly smoking, which can further affect the respiratory health of family members.

Motorists are advised to use air-conditioning and activate the vehicle’s recirculation mode to reduce the entry of polluted outdoor air.

The ministry said those experiencing persistent coughing, sore throat, eye irritation or shortness of breath should seek treatment at the nearest health facility immediately.
