KUCHING: The proposed construction of a monsoon drain along Jalan Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan is expected to significantly reduce the risk of flash floods in the area, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the Sarawak government has approved RM50 million for the implementation of the project, which aims to improve the drainage system and enhance flood mitigation along the busy stretch of road.
He expressed hope that the project will be tendered out by the end of 2026 once the necessary planning and technical preparations have been completed.
“The construction of the monsoon drain will help address the recurring flash flood issues faced by residents and road users in the area, especially during intense downpours,” he said.
Lo noted that flash floods have occasionally affected parts of Jalan Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan, Everbright Park, Capital Garden, Jalan Arang, to name a few, due to inadequate drainage capacity and rapid surface runoff during heavy rain.
He said the objective is to drain water from Capital Garden, Arang Road area, out to the front of Jalan Kalong Ningkan.
“This is one of the major Sarawak government-funded drainage projects in my constituency. Hopefully this project will be tendered out end of 2026.
“With this project, we hope to improve water flow and ensure that excess rainwater can be discharged more efficiently, thereby reducing the likelihood of flooding,” he explained.
Lo added that the initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen infrastructure and address drainage issues in rapidly developing areas.
Once completed, the monsoon drain is expected to benefit not only residents living nearby but also thousands of motorists who travel along the route daily.
Lo also stressed that proper drainage infrastructure is crucial as urban development continues to expand in the Batu Kitang constituency.
He said the project will complement other infrastructure improvements being planned in the area to enhance public safety, convenience and long-term sustainability.
Drainage and irrigation projects are critical infrastructure developed to manage water resources, primarily focusing on reducing flood risks through controlled, efficient water conveyance.
