KUCHING: Road accident statistics in Sarawak for 2025 showed that driver negligence remained the main cause of incidents, with several types of accidents recording worrying figures.

Deputy Transport Minister, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, said data from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) indicated that rear-end collisions dominated the statistics at 33.3 per cent.

This was followed by accidents caused by speeding and vehicles skidding off the road at around 21.9 per cent, while side collisions during entry and exit at junctions accounted for 21 per cent.

“Meanwhile, head-on collisions only recorded 0.1 per cent, although the risk of fatalities in such incidents remains high,” he told reporters during the RTD Sarawak Road Safety Advocacy and Enforcement Programme at the Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal today.

Hasbi added that apart from driver negligence, the increasing number of vehicles on the road also contributed to the rising accident rate.

Other contributing factors included poor weather conditions, uneven road surfaces and challenging terrain.

“Drivers are reminded to comply with road regulations, including wearing seat belts, avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving, and maintaining safe speeds,” he said.

At the same time, he also called on passengers to help improve safety by becoming the “eyes and ears” of the authorities.

He said recordings or photographs of reckless drivers could be submitted through RTD Sarawak’s e-complaint channel, WhatsApp or online portal for further action.

“These statistics are not just numbers – they reflect the real risks faced by every road user. Awareness and proactive action from both drivers and passengers are equally important in reducing accidents,” he said.

With a focus on data and the actual causes of accidents, Hasbi said stricter enforcement and cooperation from all road users were expected to help reduce accident rates in the future.
