SIMANGGANG: Sarawak’s political stability has allowed development efforts to be carried out steadily, including initiatives to strengthen cooperatives in rural areas.
Sri Aman Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodi, said the stability was built on strong public support, as well as a shared sense of understanding and cooperation among Sarawakians.
She said maintaining that stability remained key to ensuring development plans, particularly in the cooperative sector, could continue without disruption.
“With a stable government and consistent policies, development can be implemented in a more organised and effective manner, including efforts to grow the cooperative sector.
“Cooperatives play an important role in strengthening the grassroots economy. Amid global economic uncertainty, cooperatives can help communities generate income, create jobs, and ease the cost of living,” she said.
Doris said this when officiating at the closing of the ‘JOM@COOP Turun Padang Memasyarakatkan Koperasi 2026 – Siri Platinum Institut Koperasi Malaysia (IKMa) 70 Tahun’ programme here today (April 16).
She described the programme as timely in promoting greater public awareness and participation in the cooperative movement.
She added that cooperatives should not be seen merely as economic entities, but as a key tool for inclusive development.
“Through cooperatives, we can ensure that no group is left behind, especially those in rural areas, as well as women and youth. The role of IKMa in providing training and support is crucial in keeping the movement relevant and competitive,” she said.
She also encouraged young people to see cooperatives as a viable platform for the future.
“In a more challenging economic landscape, we need to explore models that are inclusive and sustainable, and cooperatives are one of them,” she added.
Doris said a stronger cooperative ecosystem could be built with continued political stability, clear policies, and support from agencies such as IKMa.
She also reminded the public of their role in preserving stability, noting that any disruption could affect the economy, job opportunities, and overall well-being.
“People play an important role in determining the direction of the state, not only through support for development policies, but also through unity and a shared spirit. Any instability will have a direct impact on the economy, job opportunities, and overall well-being.
“Therefore, we must ensure that development efforts can continue smoothly for a more inclusive and prosperous future,” she said.
