MIRI: A search is under way in Miri for a 13-year-old boy who disappeared beneath the water while swimming with friends this morning (May 1).

The teenager, identified as Jakson Mara, is believed to have drowned while bathing in a man-made pond in the Senadin area.

Emergency services were alerted at 11:04 am, with a team from the Lutong fire station arriving at the scene just over ten minutes later.

According to fire officials, Jakson had been in the water with seven other boys when he went under and failed to resurface. The others managed to get out safely.

Rescue personnel immediately began searching the surface of the pond, concentrating on the last point where he was seen. By midday, there had been no sign of the boy.

Specialist divers from the Fire and Rescue Department’s water rescue unit have been mobilised to assist, signalling a more intensive phase of the operation as crews work to locate him.

Eight firefighters are involved in the search, supported by a fire rescue tender. No other agencies had joined the operation as of early afternoon.

As the afternoon progressed, there was still no trace of Jakson, with efforts expected to continue as specialist teams comb the water.
