KUCHING: The 50th Sarawak Open Men’s and Women’s and 5th Sarawak Veterans Mandarin Singing Competition, held from May 1 to 3 at SJK Chung Hua Jernang, Samarahan, celebrates five decades of musical achievements.
Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim praised the competition for promoting unity and harmony through music.
“This platform brings together participants from across Sarawak, allowing them to connect and showcase the state’s rich cultural diversity,” he said during the ceremony.
He also commended the organisers for maintaining a high standard throughout the years, and admired the quality of the contestants from various divisions across Sarawak. He expressed hope that the competition would continue to grow and gain wider recognition through mainstream and social media.
President of the Sarawak Singing Association and Tanjung Batu Councillor Johnny Pang Leong Ming highlighted the competition’s history.
“Since its inception in 1975, it has become one of Sarawak’s most iconic Mandarin singing competitions,” he said.
Pang also emphasised the importance of the veteran category for experienced singers to showcase their talents and keep their passion alive.
Permanent Honorary Advisor and function chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok reflected on the competition’s milestones, noting that it remains a platform for unity and cultural exchange.
“This event nurtures local talent and provides participants with valuable stage experience,” he added.
The competition continues to inspire music lovers and discover future talents, showcasing Sarawak’s commitment to musical excellence and cultural harmony.
