KUCHING: A businessman was sentenced to RM70,000 fine and two days imprisonment by the Sessions Court today for stealing electricity by installing foreign cables and bypassed electricity meter last August.

The 29-year-old Alvin Chin Ngian Yik pleaded guilty to the two charges read in front of Judge Iris Awen Jon. He changed his plea during today’s trial.

For each charge, he was sentenced to one day imprisonment and penalty fine of RM35,000 in default six months imprisonment. The sentence is to run consecutively.

Chin was charged under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance (Chapter 50).

He did the offence at a commercial premise near Moyan Square along Jalan Tondong-Batu Kawa on August 20, 2025 between 10:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Several enforcement officers from the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunication and the Investigation Unit of Syarikat SESCO Bhd attended the court proceedings.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ronald Felix Hardin, informed the court that Chin, being the registered customer of the licensee, has dishonestly extracted electricity supply through direct tapping cables found connected from the main wirings of the commercial premises into the ground floor shoplot of which Chin is the tenant.

Meanwhile, Chin was represented by defence counsels, Clement Wong and Christopher Chin.
