MIRI: Police here issued 20 traffic summonses and arrested two men during late-night operations targeting drunk-driving and traffic offences along Jalan Miri-Airport.

The special operations, known as ‘Ops Mabuk’, was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters between 11 pm on May 21 and 2 am the following morning.

Traffic enforcement officers conduct breath screening tests on motorists during special anti-drunk-driving operations in Miri.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 96 individuals and 83 vehicles were inspected during the three-hour operation.

Among the offences detected were driving without a valid licence, illegal exhaust modifications, expired road tax, and failure to display probationary ‘P’ plates.

Two local men, aged 22 and 23, were detained on suspicion of riding motorcycles under the influence of alcohol.

Police said preliminary breath screening tests using the Screening Device 2 (SD2) allegedly found alcohol in both suspects’ systems.

They were later taken to Miri Hospital for blood samples to be collected as part of further investigations.

Farhan warned that offenders convicted of drunk driving could face up to two years in prison, fines between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and suspension of their driving licences for up to two years.

He said police would continue taking firm action against motorists whose actions endangered other road users.

Members of the public were also urged to obey traffic laws, avoid illegal vehicle modifications, and report street racing or traffic-related offences to the authorities.
