BINTULU: Firefighters rescued a trapped motorist after his car collided with a lorry carrying an estimated 20 tonnes of oil palm fruit along the Bintulu-Miri Coastal Road on Wednesday (Jun 9) morning.

The adult male driver of a Perodua Bezza suffered leg injuries when the vehicle was involved in a crash with a green Nissan lorry.

Despite being trapped inside the driver’s seat, he remained conscious throughout the rescue operation.

Personnel from the Samalaju Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 7.34am.

Upon arrival nine minutes later, firefighters found the victim pinned inside the damaged vehicle.

Using specialised rescue equipment, including a telescopic ram, the team created sufficient space to extricate the driver safely from the wreckage.

The operation was carried out under the Fire and Rescue Department’s SAVER rescue protocol.

The victim was subsequently handed over to Ministry of Health personnel for further treatment.

The rescue operation, led by senior fire officer Shahrum Jukri, involved five firefighters and a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT).

The situation was brought under control at 7.57am and the operation concluded at 8.11am after crews secured the area.

The cause of the collision has yet to be determined.
