MIRI: Several residents trapped inside a malfunctioning lift at a condominium in Miri were safely rescued by firefighters on Thursday (Jun 11) night following a swift emergency response by the Fire and Rescue Department.

The incident occurred at City Condo East Valley, Block A2, on the sixth floor, prompting an emergency call to the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station at 8.42pm.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, a team from the station was immediately dispatched after receiving reports that members of the public were trapped inside a lift.

Members of the Fire and Rescue Department monitor rescue efforts as a lift technician works to open the stalled lift and safely evacuate trapped occupants.

The fire engine left the station within a minute of the alarm being sounded and arrived at the scene at 8.46pm.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that occupants were trapped in the lift as reported.

A rapid assessment was conducted to determine the condition of those inside while ensuring the area remained safe and under control.

Operation commander PBK I Abdul Rahman said firefighters maintained close monitoring of the situation while coordinating efforts to free the trapped occupants.

A lift technician subsequently carried out the technical procedure to open the lift doors, allowing the occupants to be safely evacuated.

No injuries were reported.

The rescue operation was brought under control within a minute after firefighters commenced operations at the scene.

Firefighters remained on site to ensure the lift was secure and that there was no further risk to residents before concluding the operation.

The operation officially ended at 9.13pm, with the firefighting team returning to the station shortly afterwards.

A total of five firefighters were involved in the operation, supported by a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT).

The incident site was located approximately three kilometres from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station.

The Fire and Rescue Department reminded building managements and property owners to ensure lifts are regularly inspected and maintained to minimise the risk of mechanical failures that could endanger occupants.

Thursday’s incident ended without casualties, thanks to the prompt response of emergency personnel and the effective coordination between firefighters and technical support staff.
