MIRI: Sarawak’s journey towards becoming a high-income, technology-driven and green economy reflects the true spirit of Hijrah, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said today (June 17).

Drawing parallels between the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad SAW from Makkah to Madinah and Sarawak’s own transformation agenda, he said the state is undertaking a bold shift from a traditional resource-based economy to one powered by innovation, digital technology, renewable energy and high-value industries.

Speaking at the State-level Ma’al Hijrah 1448H/2026 celebration at the Miri Indoor Stadium, Abang Johari said the values underpinning Hijrah, namely courage, sacrifice, wisdom and unity, continue to serve as important guiding principles in shaping Sarawak’s future.

The celebration was graced by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Also present were Deputy Premiers, Cabinet ministers, senior government officials, religious leaders and community representatives from across the state.

Abang Johari said this year’s Ma’al Hijrah theme, ‘Ummah Maju Makmur’ (A Progressive and Prosperous Ummah), resonates strongly with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a developed, inclusive and sustainable economy under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

“Just as Hijrah marked a turning point in the history of Islamic civilisation, Sarawak today is undergoing a significant transformation that will define the future of our state and our people,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak is no longer relying solely on conventional economic sectors but is actively investing in emerging industries that will drive future growth and competitiveness.

Among the state’s flagship initiatives is the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap 2035, which aims to position Sarawak as a regional leader in clean energy and hydrogen production.

According to the Premier, the initiative demonstrates Sarawak’s determination not merely to adapt to global economic changes but to become a key player in shaping the energy transition taking place worldwide.

He also highlighted the development of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, describing it as a symbol of Sarawak’s commitment to embracing smart and sustainable urban transportation solutions.

Beyond infrastructure and energy, the state is strengthening its digital economy ecosystem while pursuing opportunities in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and high-skilled workforce development.

“These achievements represent the essence of Hijrah, moving from old ways of thinking towards innovation, from dependence on traditional resources towards creating new opportunities, and from being consumers of technology to becoming creators of technology,” he said.

However, Abang Johari stressed that economic success alone would not be sufficient to ensure lasting prosperity.

He said Islam teaches that material progress must be balanced with strong moral values, spiritual development and social responsibility.

“A prosperous society is not measured solely by economic indicators but by the strength of its character, integrity and commitment to justice and compassion,” he said.

The Premier called on Muslims to embrace lifelong learning, strengthen digital literacy, and equip themselves with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex and technology-driven world.

At the same time, he emphasised that the benefits of development must be shared equitably across society, including among rural communities, youths, women, senior citizens and vulnerable groups.

He said true prosperity is achieved when communities live in peace and harmony, enjoy equal opportunities, and are empowered to participate meaningfully in the state’s development journey.

Abang Johari also commended the Majlis Islam Sarawak, Islamic agencies, mosques, suraus and non-governmental organisations for their continued contributions towards strengthening the Muslim community through education, welfare programmes, zakat and waqf management, and community development initiatives.

As Sarawak enters a new Islamic year, he urged the people to embrace the spirit of Hijrah as a catalyst for continuous improvement and transformation.

“We must move from complacency to excellence, from division to unity, from weakness to strength, and from dependence to creating opportunities for ourselves and future generations,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the future, Abang Johari said Muslims in Sarawak have the potential to become a progressive, resilient and respected community capable of making significant contributions to the state’s continued development.

He concluded by expressing hope that the new Hijrah year would bring peace, prosperity and blessings to Sarawak and its people, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to advancing both economic progress and the development of the ummah.
