KUCHING: Politeknik Kuching Sarawak (PKS) has apologised over complaints about its hostel conditions, and is taking immediate steps to improve student accommodation following concerns raised on social media during the recent intake of new students.
The institution said student welfare remains its priority, with a series of measures already underway to address the issues and enhance hostel management.
According to the statement, PKS provided hostel accommodation to 1,600 of its 1,663 new students for the Academic Session I 2026/2027, representing 96.2 per cent of the new intake.
It said the high placement rate reflected its commitment to ensuring new students had access to accommodation despite existing capacity limitations.
Among the immediate measures introduced are optimising the use of existing hostel space, providing additional hostel equipment in stages, carrying out maintenance and repair works, and replacing furniture where required.
The institution is also undertaking asset procurement to further improve hostel facilities, with the initiatives aimed at safeguarding students’ welfare, safety and well-being.
PKS noted that its current hostel capacity is only sufficient to accommodate about 50 per cent of its overall student enrolment.
It said efforts to expand hostel capacity would continue in line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s aspiration of providing hostel accommodation for at least 70 per cent of full-time undergraduate students by 2035.
PKS added that it would continue strengthening its hostel monitoring and management mechanisms to ensure the facilities remain in good condition, and continue meeting students’ needs, while welcoming feedback from students, parents and stakeholders to improve its services.
