Wee Kok Tiong re-elected to lead Sarawak Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Education Society for 2026-2028

KUCHING: Datuk Wee Kok Tiong has been re-elected chairman of the Sarawak Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Education Society for the 2026-2028 term following the society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday (June 30).

Wee, who has led the education society since 2005, retained the top post as members endorsed the new board to continue steering the organisation’s educational and charitable initiatives.

He is also president of the Sarawak-China Friendship Association.

Founded in 1979, the society was established to promote education by providing financial assistance and donations to local educational institutions, particularly Chinese independent secondary schools.

According to the society, it has channelled a cumulative RM4.94 million to five Chinese independent secondary schools in Sarawak – Chung Hua Middle Schools No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, Serian Public Secondary School, and Batu Kawa Min Lit Secondary School.

In addition, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) contributed RM2.51 million through the society, bringing the total educational assistance distributed to RM7.45 million.

The society also reported a healthy financial position as of June 29, with RM98,782.16 in its current account and RM3.97 million in fixed deposits.

Besides its financial assets, the society owns a sizeable property portfolio comprising 13 parcels of land donated by various benefactors, and a three-storey shophouse contributed by prominent community leaders.

The land donations include 10 parcels from the Kuching Hokkien Association, one parcel each from Datuk Lee Chee Ming, Ang Cheng Ho Sdn Bhd, and Chua Beng Thian.

The society also owns a three-storey shophouse donated by Datuk Amar Stephen Yong Kuet Tze, Datuk Chan Siaw Hee, and Wee Hua Boo.

The newly elected board for the 2026-2028 term comprises Datuk Wee Kok Tiong (chairman), Datuk Yii Chi Hau (deputy chairman), Kapitan Chai Yong Liang (vice-chairman), Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat (secretary), Chiew Boon Shen (assistant secretary), Ng Khing Huat (treasurer), Liew Thau Sen (assistant treasurer), and committee members, Datuk Wong Tiong Hock, Datuk Tan Jit Kee, Ngu Choo Kiong, Lim Swee Chiaw, Wilson Tan, Boon Choon Kong and Chai Kane Seng.

The society expressed appreciation to its donors and the public for their continued trust and support over the years.
