SIBU: Thirty-eight top scorers in the 2025 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination from SMK Methodist received a total of RM10,800 in study incentives today in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
The incentives were contributed by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek to reward students who obtained a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 and above.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Chieng said this was the fourth consecutive year, since 2022, that he had presented incentives to STPM high achievers in his constituency.
“The incentive today is not merely a form of recognition for your academic achievements. More importantly, it is an encouragement for you to continue pursuing excellence and a reminder that your hard work and determination are appreciated by the community,” he said.
He expressed hope that the students would return to Sibu to work after completing their tertiary education.
“I hope that one day you will return with your knowledge, experience and talents to contribute to your hometown, Sibu, and to Sarawak. The future development of Sarawak depends on young people like you who are equipped with knowledge, guided by strong values and committed to making a positive difference,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chieng called on the people of Sarawak to proudly display the state flag and take part in the Sarawak Day celebrations on Jul 22, which will be centred in Sibu this year.
“Let us celebrate our heritage with pride and appreciate the diversity, culture and values that make Sarawak truly unique,” he said.
SMK Methodist principal Philip Ling said 77 candidates from the school sat for the examination this year.
“Thirty-eight of them achieved a CGPA of 3.0 and above. The school’s overall CGPA was 2.99, a decline of 0.08 points compared with the previous year.
“However, the quality of the students’ individual performances remains at a satisfactory level,” he said.
