MIRI: This city will celebrate another milestone in its urban transformation this Sunday (July 19) with the soft opening of the Kenyalang Convention and Exhibition Centre One (KCEC One), a world-class convention and exhibition venue that will make its public debut by hosting one of the city’s largest community fitness events, involving more than 1,000 participants.

The 1,000-Person Zumba at KCEC One, organised by SABERKAS Senadin Branch in collaboration with the Senadin Constituency Service Centre, marks the fifth edition of ‘Zumba 5.0: Dance for Sarawak 2026’ in conjunction with the Sarawak Day celebration.

Speaking at a press conference held at Kenyalang Smart City on Tuesday (July 14), Minister for Transport and Senadin assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the event was more than a community fitness programme.

It also showcases KCEC One’s readiness to host large-scale events and represents another significant milestone in Miri’s journey towards becoming a smart, vibrant and internationally connected city.

“This gathering is not only a celebration of health and community spirit, but also a historic occasion that reflects Miri’s continued progress and the confidence of the private sector in the city’s future,” he said.

Lee said KCEC One complements the Greater Miri Development Plan and is expected to become a catalyst for economic growth by strengthening the city’s position as a destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE).

Designed as an international-standard convention and exhibition centre, KCEC One will serve as a multifunctional venue capable of hosting conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, concerts, sporting events, cultural performances, educational programmes, and community activities throughout the year.

He said the new facility would attract national and international events, generate greater visitor arrivals, and create wider economic opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and other local businesses.

“Every successful event hosted here will contribute to the local economy while enhancing Miri’s reputation as a dynamic regional hub for business, tourism and investment,” he said.

Lee added that KCEC One forms part of the broader Kenyalang Smart City master development, which also includes plans for the proposed Fudan University Medical Branch Campus, a teaching hospital and an integrated medical research institute.

He said these initiatives have the potential to position Miri as a regional centre for healthcare, medical education and research while creating high-value employment opportunities and attracting quality investments into northern Sarawak.

The minister also commended Ar. Teo Ah Khing and Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd for their vision and commitment in delivering KCEC One.

“This remarkable achievement demonstrates what can be accomplished when visionary private sector leadership works hand in hand with the government to create opportunities, stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for the people,” he said.

Lee invited the public to take part in the 1,000-Person Zumba this Sunday and experience KCEC One, describing the event as the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both the venue and the city.

Concluding the press conference, Lee said Sarawak continues to make significant strides under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, with investments in modern infrastructure, digital innovation, renewable energy, and high-value industries laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

“The soft opening of KCEC One symbolises the confidence of the private sector in Sarawak’s future and reinforces Miri’s role as a smart city and vibrant economic hub.

“Together, through strong public-private partnerships, we will continue building a smarter, greener and more prosperous Sarawak for generations to come,” he said.

Also present at the press conference was Teo, who is also Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd’s founder and chairman.
