Rock legend Datuk Awie has confirmed that veteran band Kristal is returning under his management, marking a new chapter in a partnership that began more than two decades ago.
The Wings frontman said Kristal’s members, led by guitarist Rody, recently met him to discuss their future, prompting him to invite the band back under his RPM Label, a division of his Rumah Produksi Merah (RPM).
“I want to help shape their music again, not interfere with it. They’ll still have creative freedom, but I’ll be there to offer ideas that might help take their music to the next level,” Awie said during rehearsals for the Konsert 3 Veto yesterday.
He revealed that a signing ceremony is being planned, not only for Kristal but also for several other artistes joining the label.
Awie said he had always believed in Kristal’s potential, having nurtured the band since its early days.
“They’re a great band and I’ve known them since they were young. I feel it’s time to continue what we started and do something meaningful for them again,” he said.
Among the projects in the pipeline is a new studio album featuring original material, including English-language songs.
“They’re already working on an English track, and I think it’s good. Ewal’s vocals are strong and the music sounds promising. We may fine-tune the arrangement and production to make it even better,” he said.
Awie added that his goal is to help establish Kristal as one of the country’s leading rock bands.
While the group has been performing regularly at food festivals and public events, he acknowledged that such shows are currently their main source of income.
“Everyone has to earn a living. Maybe their time hasn’t come yet, but I believe they have what it takes to become a high-demand band,” he said.
Awie, who founded Kristal through Awie Entertainment in 2000, said he first approached the band about a reunion around two months ago after learning they were no longer tied to any management.
His immediate priority, he added, is producing a brand-new album filled with original songs rather than covers.
Kristal’s current line-up comprises Rody (lead guitar), Ewal (vocals), Kechiq (bass) and Acap (drums), while former frontman Lan now performs with Kristal X.
