ASAJAYA: Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has clarified rumours circulating on social media, claiming that the Samarahan Regatta will be held in Kampung Tambirat this September, are untrue.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said the viral post was believed to have been created by mischievous individuals, adding that he had personally seen the post.
“With the existence of social media, there will always be people who like to create mischief. We have not made any plans to organise the regatta yet. God-willing, we do intend to bring it back in the future.
“However, it cannot be held this year following the riverbank collapse at the location that had been identified as the venue for the event,” he said.
He told reporters this after officiating the Islamic Information Centre (IIC) Cares @ Environment 2026: ‘Our Mosque, Our Responsibilit’ programme at Darul Rahmah Mosque, Kampung Tambirat Lot, today.
Elaborating further, Abdul Karim said the site that had been identified for the regatta was currently not safe for public use.
“As such, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed that the riverbank area should be reorganised, repaired and the entire Kampung Tambirat river embankment extended.
“God-willing, the project will be called for tender in the near future. Once it is completed, we can then reconsider organising the Samarahan Regatta,” he said.
Abdul Karim said he had also seen the viral poster and described those behind it as creative for including the word ‘rumours’ in the announcement about the Samarahan Regatta.
“I saw the poster as well. They were clever enough to include the word ‘rumour’ regarding the Samarahan Regatta.
“There are indeed people who create such things, but that is the reality of the social media era, where anyone can upload any information. Therefore, we must be wise enough to assess and verify whether the information being shared is accurate.
“There are currently no plans to organise the Samarahan Regatta in Kampung Tambirat. God-willing, it will happen one day,” he said.
Earlier, a Facebook post that went viral claimed that the Kampung Tambirat Regatta would return in September 2026.
However, the post also carried the word “rumours” and stated that the proposed date remained subject to an official announcement.
The post further claimed that excitement was building over the possible return of the Kampung Tambirat Regatta in September 2026, if there were no unforeseen obstacles, while encouraging the public to wait for an official announcement that would be shared on social media.
