KUCHING: The countdown to the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Sarawak will officially begin on Sept 18 with the launch of the Road to One Year Countdown SEA Games 2027 event, marking one year before the state co-hosts the biennial sporting event.
Deputy State Secretary (Operations) and Sarawak Local Organising Committee (LOC) Secretariat chairman Datuk Hii Chang Kee said the event aims to build excitement and raise public awareness ahead of Sarawak’s first time hosting the SEA Games from Sept 18 to 29, 2027.
“The event is organised to increase public awareness that Sarawak will be a co-host of the 2027 SEA Games.
“Through this programme, we want the public to know more about the Games, including the sports that will be contested and the number of events to be hosted in Sarawak,” he said after chairing a meeting on the countdown event here yesterday.
He said the grand launch is expected to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, with other distinguished guests in attendance at a venue to be announced later.
During the event, Abang Johari will also launch the official SEA Games 2027 (Sarawak Cluster) website.
The website has been developed to support Sarawak’s role as a host cluster by providing a centralised digital platform that promotes the state as a premier destination for sports, tourism and culture.
It will serve as the official source of information for both local and international audiences, offering comprehensive details on the SEA Games events hosted in Sarawak, including sports, competition schedules, venues, participating countries and other related information.
A total of 43 sports will be contested at the 34th SEA Games, with Sarawak hosting 18 sports as well as the opening ceremony at Stadium Sarawak.
Kuala Lumpur will also host 18 sports and the closing ceremony, while Penang will stage six sports and Johor will host one sport.
