PADAWAN: A teenager’s claim that he was robbed at knifepoint in Batu Kawa has backfired after police found that the entire incident was fabricated to avoid paying a fine for replacing a lost identity card.
The 19-year-old labourer is now being investigated for lodging a false police report after allegedly admitting that no robbery had taken place.
Padawan Police chief Supt Barry William said the suspect had initially reported that he was walking to Everwin Supermarket in MJC, Batu Kawa, at around 7.40 pm last Sunday (Aug 2) when he was approached by two unidentified men on a motorcycle.
He claimed that one of the men threatened him with a sharp object while the other made off with his wallet containing his identity card, a Public Bank ATM card, his motorcycle road tax, and RM120 in cash.
The complainant also claimed that he escaped the alleged robbery without injuries.
“However, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) later questioned the complainant and uncovered inconsistencies in his account. During questioning, the complainant admitted that he had not been robbed.
“He confessed that he had actually misplaced his belongings and fabricated the story as he did not want to be fined for applying for a replacement identity card,” he said.
Barry stated that the case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information to a public servant.
Investigation papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor with a recommendation for prosecution.
