KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has yet to receive instructions to display proposed electoral redelineation maps from the Election Commission (EC).

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng stated that the council is prepared to exhibit the maps immediately once official directions are issued.

Commenting on media reports and speculation surrounding alleged new state constituencies – including a proposed ‘Tabuan Jaya’ seat – Wee urged the public and political observers to refrain from playing a guessing game.

“So far, we have not received any instructions just yet. Definitely, once the instructions come, we will display,” he said after the Mayor’s Walk press conference at MBKS headquarters today.

Speculation regarding new boundaries comes amidst ongoing discussions over a proposed exercise to add 17 state constituencies, which would expand the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) from 82 to 99 seats.

Wee noted that Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, had previously clarified that any proposed boundary changes must first be endorsed and approved by the DUN.

“So whether those seats are real seats or curated seats, we are yet to see. Just be patient, because they say it is August. So, let it come out,” Wee added.

He emphasised that external parties, including the federal EC, should respect decisions made by the DUN regarding Sarawak’s electoral boundaries.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Wee expressed confidence in the current Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration’s readiness for any upcoming election scenarios.

He highlighted that under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the state government remains focused on serving the people continuously.

“Whatever the changes on seats and all those, it will not have much effect. The present government is ready for anything,” Wee stated, adding that official announcements regarding the display will be made as soon as instructions arrive.
