KUCHING: Independent Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How is keeping his political options open, saying there is no decision to be made as yet.
With renewed speculation linking him to the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), See has adopted a measured approach, stressing that his immediate priority remains serving his constituents rather than securing a political label.
“At the moment, I just want to focus on trying to do my best for the people in Batu Lintang,” he said after officiating at the Health Screening 2026 jointly organised by Saberkas Batu Lintang branch and KRT Tabuan Laru at Emart King Centre here, today.
See said he could not join any political party while the current state assembly remained in place.
“Of course, I can’t join any political party until the DUN is dissolved. Only after that can I make a decision on which party I should join, subject to them accepting me as well,” he said.
He also declined to speculate as to whether he would defend Batu Lintang, where he has served as assemblyman for three terms.
“We have to leave that question aside. Wait until after the dissolution,” he said.
Of late there has been renewed speculation over his political leaning, particularly following his appearance at several government functions and a recent photograph of him with SUPP leaders and Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairman and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
For now, he appears content to let the speculation remain speculation.
“At the moment, I just want to focus on trying to do my best for the people in Batu Lintang.”
He has previously been linked to SUPP, with similar reports emerging in 2024. At the time, SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the party had not received any application from See.
See, who contested Batu Lintang in the 12th Sarawak election in December 2021 on a Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) ticket won the seat in a five-cornered fight.
He subsequently left PSB in 2022 to serve as an independent.
Prior to joining PSB, See was sacked from PKR in April 2020. In the 2016 state election he defended the Batu Lintang seat which he first won in 2011 under PKR.
Meanwhile, at the function See highlighted the Sarawak government’s Senior Citizens Health Benefits initiative, which provides cashless outpatient treatment at panel clinics, with a maximum limit of RM500 per person per year.
He said the initiative was particularly useful in helping senior citizens access healthcare while easing pressure on hospitals.
“It is very, very helpful because it eases congestion in the hospital and allows speedy attention from the clinic. All they have to do is just register,” he said.
On the related matter, he said his team had identified areas within Batu Lintang with significant numbers of elderly residents, including Tabuan Dayak, King Centre and the Rock Road areas, and had been taking mobile services directly to the community.
These include assistance with registration for available benefits as well as health screening programmes.
“We try to do this as often as possible because this is not an ad hoc thing. It has to be sustained, it has to be carried out all the time,” he said.
The approach, he added, was intended to make access to assistance easier for residents, particularly those who may find travelling to hospitals or government facilities difficult.
