MIRI: The Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) is stepping up community engagement efforts by bringing policing closer to residents through an outreach programme held at Dewan Masjid Nurul Yaqin, Kampung Muhibbah, Ladang 3, Bekenu yesterday.
The programme, which ran from 8 am to noon, drew about 235 participants, including police officers and personnel as well as residents of Kampung Muhibbah, Ladang 3.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah led the engagement, joined by senior IPD Miri officers, 20 junior-ranking police personnel and seven Amanita members.
The programme provided a direct platform for residents to engage with the police on issues affecting their community, particularly crime prevention, commercial crime, drug abuse and road safety.
In his address, ACP Mohd Farhan highlighted current crime trends and the growing risks posed by scams and cybercrime, while stressing the importance of vigilance and early preventive action by members of the public.
A question-and-answer and community engagement session also allowed residents to raise concerns, lodge complaints and share views and suggestions on security and policing services.
The Amanita programme formed another key component of the outreach, giving women, particularly housewives, an opportunity to engage more closely with police personnel while encouraging greater community participation in neighbourhood safety initiatives.
The programme also featured exhibitions by the Narcotics, Traffic and Amanita units, together with displays of PDRM traffic patrol vehicles and motorcycles. The exhibits proved particularly popular among children attending the event.
The outreach was also attended by Kampung Muhibbah Ladang 3 village chief and Sarawak Bugis Association adviser Hassan Malik, Community Policing programme director Shamsudin Hamzah, Sarawak Bugis Association deputy chairman Rahmat Hassan, Masjid Nurul Yaqin chairman Dedi Ismail and Kampung Muhibbah Ladang 3 KRT chairman Mohd Sabhan Bohari.
The programme opened with the arrival of ACP Mohd Farhan, followed by welcoming remarks, the singing of Negaraku and Sarawak Ibu Pertiwiku, and a prayer.
More than a conventional policing engagement, the programme underscored PDRM’s approach of working with communities as partners in crime prevention.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening public awareness of emerging crime threats, including cybercrime and drug abuse, while promoting safer road practices and reinforcing the role of residents as the police’s strategic partners in maintaining community security.
The programme concluded at noon without incident, with the event proceeding in a safe, orderly and harmonious manner.
