KUCHING: The sister of a well-known Sarawak politician claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today (Aug 21) to misappropriating RM2.42 million belonging to her late father.

The 60-year-old woman pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before Judge Iris Awen Jon.

According to the charge, the accused allegedly misappropriated RM2.42 million from a savings account belonging to her late father.

The offence was allegedly committed on June 10, 2024, at a bank near Jalan Song Thian Cheok here.

She was charged under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between six months and five years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

The court granted the accused bail of RM100,000 with two local sureties.

The case was fixed for mention on Sept 28.

It was understood that the accused’s brother lodged a police report after discovering the alleged misappropriation of funds left by their late father, who was also a former Sarawak politician.

Allegedly, the complainant also discovered cash withdrawals and a fund transfer from their late father’s bank account.

The complainant alleged that on June 10, 2024, a day before their father died on June 11, 2024, the accused had withdrawn and transferred money from the deceased’s account without authorisation.

It was also stated that RM2.42 million was withdrawn in cash on June 10, 2024.

The complainant alleged that the money belonged entirely to their late father and should have formed part of his estate to be distributed among the rightful heirs in accordance with the law.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Chuah Kai Sheng, prosecuted, while the accused was represented by counsels Lim Heng Choo and Roger Chin.
