SERIAN: The RM4.26-million upgrading of the Serian Sports Complex will see its athletics and football facilities rebuilt to international standards, with completion targeted for September next year.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said the project, implemented under an allocation from the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), would take 15 months to complete.

He said the upgrading was necessary to improve the condition of the stadium, particularly its football field, which had been heavily used by the local community.

“The football field at Serian Stadium is very popular and is very much needed.

“It is the main focus for football players in Serian and has been heavily used by the public, which is why it needs to be upgraded to international standards,” he said after officiating at the project’s ground-breaking ceremony here today (Aug 21).

In his speech earlier, John said the project would also provide better sporting facilities for schools around Serian district and town.

He expressed hope that the implementing agency and contractor could complete the project according to the stipulated schedule.

“Previously, the stadium was very popular among the people of Serian, particularly schools holding their annual sports meets and other related activities.

“Now, some schools have had to go to Siburan, the newer venue in Balai Ringin, while others have had to travel as far as Samarahan and UNIMAS,” he added.

The project commenced on June 19 and is scheduled for completion on Sept 18, 2027.

It has been awarded to Pembina Tenaga Bumi Sdn Bhd and is being carried out based on an in-house design.

Among the main works is the removal of the existing running track and construction of a new track using the Sandwich System, designed for greater durability and to meet World Athletics standards.

Existing field-event facilities will also be replaced, including those for shot put, discus, javelin, steeplechase, long jump, triple jump and pole vault, in accordance with World Athletics standards.

The existing football pitch will meanwhile be rebuilt with a subsoil drainage system to quickly channel excess water beneath the ground surface.

The system is intended to prevent waterlogging, protect the grass roots and ensure the pitch remains dry and safe for use.

Other works include repairing the existing toilets and removing selected trees around the complex, including near the long jump and triple jump facilities, to prevent fallen leaves from affecting the quality of the new running track.
