TELUK MELANO: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) is prepared to apply similar safety measures to childcare centres if weather conditions reach levels requiring such action.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry would take the necessary steps based on established requirements, particularly when the safety and welfare of children are involved.

“If conditions exceed a certain level that requires action, then we should at least issue similar instructions.

“The regulations are universal, a common set of rules that must be observed by all parties,” she said when met here today.

Nancy was responding to a question on whether childcare centres would be advised to close if weather conditions reached dangerous levels, similar to measures affecting schools.

She said the situation currently being observed was more concentrated in Sarawak, but similar requirements would apply should such conditions occur elsewhere in the country.

“If the same situation occurs in other states throughout the country, we would apply the same requirements because the rules are the same,” she said.

Nancy said the conditions would need to be monitored both in Sarawak and elsewhere in the country to ensure appropriate measures are taken in accordance with existing requirements.

She stressed that particular attention must be given when children and students are affected.

“If students are unable to attend school for too long, there will need to be proper planning. We believe that, just as during COVID-19, everyone complied with the regulations that were put in place,” she said.

Nancy said the same considerations would apply to childcare centres, adding that work-from-home arrangements under KPWKM may also need to continue should the situation persist.

She expressed confidence that the necessary measures could be implemented when required to safeguard children and ensure compliance with the relevant regulations.
