KUCHING: Sarawak’s esports industry is evolving beyond competitive gaming, with opportunities emerging in content creation, broadcasting, entrepreneurship and other digital careers.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the growing ecosystem could provide young Sarawakians with pathways into a range of careers while helping advance the state’s digital economy.
“It involves content creation, broadcasting, entrepreneurship, digital skills and career opportunities.
“This is the digital future for our young people in Sarawak,” he said.
He said that in a speech at the finale of the PUBG Mobile OOOHAA Sarawak tour, organised by the Sarawak Esports Association (SESA) together with Tencent and PUBG at Batu Kawa Innovation Hub here today (Aug 30).
He said the tour had brought esports opportunities to both urban and rural communities statewide, calling it part of Sarawak’s broader nation-building push under its digital economy agenda.
Beyond players, Dr Sim said the ecosystem also creates roles for coaches, analysts, tournament administrators, team managers, content creators, streamers, broadcasters, designers, producers and technicians.
“Participation leads to new skills, skills lead to new opportunities, and opportunities lead to careers and entrepreneurship,” he said.
He added that esports builds valuable soft skills including teamwork, discipline, communication, strategic thinking and leadership, particularly the ability to perform under pressure.
Dr Sim also announced that the Sarawak Esports Expo (SAREX) 2026 will be held on Nov 14 and 15 at the same venue.
Also present at the event were Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Batu Kawa branch chairman Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang.
