MIRI: A multi-agency enforcement operation mounted on Merdeka Eve resulted in 96 traffic summonses being issued, 20 motorcycles seized and three men arrested for suspected drug offences here.
The five-hour operation, which began at 11pm on Sunday and continued until 4am on Monday, brought together 109 enforcement personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and six other agencies in a coordinated crackdown.
Police said 420 individuals and 320 vehicles were checked during the operation, with enforcement teams targeting traffic offences, entertainment premises and potential public-order issues ahead of National Day celebrations.
The 96 summonses issued were mainly for offences including driving without a valid licence, registration numbers that did not comply with regulations, modified exhaust systems and unauthorised vehicle modifications.
Twenty motorcycles were also seized and taken to the Miri Traffic Police Station under Section 60(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The operation also focused on entertainment premises, where joint teams comprising police, Miri City Council, Immigration, Customs, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Islamic Religious Affairs Department of Sarawak conducted inspections.
All premises inspected were found to be operating within their permitted hours.
However, three local men were arrested after testing positive for drugs through urine screening. They were detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The operation involved 73 PDRM personnel and 36 personnel from the Customs Department, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Road Transport Department, Immigration Department, Miri City Council and JHEAINS.
Nine enforcement teams operated simultaneously across areas under the jurisdiction of the Miri District Police Headquarters.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said no untoward incidents were reported throughout the operation.
He said the coordinated enforcement effort was part of continued measures to safeguard public safety and maintain order during the National Day celebrations.
The authorities said similar multi-agency operations would continue as required, with enforcement agencies maintaining close cooperation to deter offences and ensure public order.
