KUCHING: A pawnshop employee pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to cheating the company of RM131,420 by allegedly using counterfeit gold and the identities of three other individuals.
The 27-year-old-woman entered the plea before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
She was charged with committing the offence between Nov 8, 2025 and July 20 2026 at the pawnshop at Jalan Market here.
According to the charge, she allegedly used counterfeit gold and the identities of other individuals to obtain pawn loans totalling RM131,420 for her personal use, thereby inducing the company to part with the money.
The offence is punishable under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
The court granted her bail of RM4,000 with two local sureties and fixed Oct 5 for pre-trial case management.
It is understood that the accused, as an employee of the pawnshop, had access and authority to receive, assess and process gold pawn transactions.
An X-ray fluorescence (XRF) test allegedly confirmed that the jewellery did not contain gold (Au), indicating that the items were not genuine gold.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
