MIRI: Police detained a 24-year-old motorcyclist for allegedly displaying a false registration number during an overnight crackdown on motorcycle offences in Miri, with 15 traffic summonses issued after 20 motorcycles were inspected.
The operations, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters, ran from 10pm on September 5 until 4 am the following day and targeted activities linked to illegal riding and street gangs.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 19 men and one woman were among those checked during the operation, which covered several locations including the city centre, Jalan Bintang, Jalan Marina, Miri Bypass and Jalan Brighton.
The detained rider was investigated under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly displaying a false registration number.
If convicted, the offence carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, imprisonment of between one and five years, or both.
Police said the operation also uncovered various traffic and technical offences involving motorcycles.
They included riding without a valid driving licence, structural modifications, modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, the absence of side mirrors, missing registration numbers and the use of non-standard or “fancy” registration plates.
The enforcement action forms part of police efforts to curb activities associated with street gangs and reckless motorcycle riding, which can endanger other road users and disrupt public order.
Farhan said police would not compromise with individuals involved in activities that put themselves or other road users at risk.
He urged motorcycle owners and riders to comply with road regulations and ensure that any vehicle modifications meet the required specifications.
