BETONG: Sungai Layar Bridge has been closed to all traffic for two weeks after the Public Works Department (PWD) identified safety issues with the structure.
The closure is to facilitate repair works and the relocation of a water supply pipeline at the bridge, with authorities urging contractors to expedite the works to ensure the bridge can be reopened safely.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the temporary closure was necessary to address the safety concerns identified by PWD.
“The department found safety issues. So the purpose today is to discuss with the contractor and consultant so that this bridge can be completed as soon as possible, so that it is safe.
“We ask the people of Betong to be patient. We will close this bridge for two weeks,” he said after inspecting the modular steel bridge here on Saturday (Sept 5).
Uggah said the closure would also enable the water supply pipeline relocation works to be carried out in a safer and more orderly manner.
During his visit, Uggah was briefed by the PWD Betong Division engineer on the bridge’s condition, repair scope and safety measures to be implemented during the works.
Uggah urged the contractor to fully utilise the two-week closure period to accelerate construction of the new bridge, with the aim of completing it ahead of schedule and opening it to the public once it is deemed safe.
At the same time, he also inspected the progress of the Saka–Spaoh Road upgrading project and the construction of the new Sungai Layar Bridge.
The delegation was briefed by Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB) officers, the implementing agency, on the latest progress of both projects.
