KUCHING: The next generation is being brought into the spotlight as Sarawak’s Malay traditional dance heritage continues to be strengthened through the Kenyalang Bersaok Project.
The 2026 edition, organised by non-governmental organisation (NGO) Kenyalang Prodigy, concluded here on Saturday (Sept 5) with 12 participating teams, including three teams competing in the newly introduced Children’s Category.
The new category is aimed at nurturing early appreciation of Sarawak Malay Tandak, or Tandak Nopeng, among primary school-aged children and ensuring the traditional art form is preserved amid rapid modernisation.
Nine teams competed in the Youth Category, while the Children’s Category featured three teams.
The event also featured the ‘Mensia Lana’ Art Exhibition and Artwork Sale by Dr Ashari Hamdan, showcasing nostalgic paintings depicting Sarawak Malay Tandak Nopeng and traditional Malay wedding customs.
Although technical factors prevented teams from neighbouring countries from competing this year, the event continued to strengthen regional cultural ties through the official presence and support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia and the Consulate of Brunei Darussalam.
Last year’s edition featured three competing teams from Brunei Darussalam.
The President of Kenyalang Prodigy Kuching (Kenyalang Prodigy), who is also Project Director of the Second Kenyalang Bersaok Project 2026, Muhammad Nur Fawwiz Bolkiah said the organisation aimed to establish the project as an arts education platform spanning the Borneo archipelago.
“This year, the introduction of the Children’s Category gives new impetus to ensure our children are not merely spectators, but also appreciators of the arts.
“We remain committed to bringing international performances and participation back to the project in future editions,” he said.
In the Youth Category, Alun Warisan Tradisi emerged as champion, followed by Anak Seni Kenyalang in second place, Bujang Sarawak in third, Anak Seni Creation in fourth, and Telaga Air Sepupu in fifth.
In the Children’s Category, Pewaris took the top spot, with Warisan Madah Tradisi finishing second, and Warisan Sri Tanjung third.
Telaga Air Sepupu also won the Best Overall Costume award.
