SERIAN: A new space dedicated to children’s development is set to open here next month, offering a range of activities and free tuition aimed at nurturing young minds in the district.

Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-kanak (PAKK) Serian, established this year, will begin operations in May under the management of Pasukan Perlindungan Kanak-Kanak (PPKK) Serian.

Its Chairperson, Melin Sunang, said the centre was created as a safe and inclusive platform for children to take part in structured activities while building confidence and social skills.

She said the initiative also aimed to bring together children from different schools, particularly those in nearby areas, through shared programmes and learning opportunities.

“We want this place to be a hub for children’s activities, whether it is mini-sports, drawing competitions or tuition classes.

“Everything we plan will involve the children, and all activities will be held here,” she said during the ‘Hari Bersama Pelanggan’ programme for the centre here today (Apr 17).

Melin said registration is open to both individuals and school groups, with children aged 12 to 18 years old encouraged to take part, while younger participants may also be considered.

She added that the centre currently focuses on enrolling primary pupils in Year Five and Six, with about 10 children already registered so far.

“For tuition, classes will run from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on weekdays, and we will rotate subjects weekly based on a prepared schedule.

“For example, one week may focus on Mathematics and another subject, followed by different subjects the next week,” she explained.

Importantly, Melin said all activities and tuition sessions are offered free of charge, with children only required to register at the centre.

“We already have supervisors in place, and as chairperson, I will also take responsibility for the students who attend.

“We want to make it easy for parents – just come, register, and the children can start joining the programmes,” she said.

Beyond academic support, the centre will also organise festive and community-based programmes throughout the year, including Hari Raya, Gawai and Chinese New Year celebrations.

Melin said such activities would provide children with opportunities to interact, gain new experiences and learn from peers outside their own schools.

“For example, during special celebrations or Children’s Day, we will invite nearby schools, especially those that may need more support, to join us here.

“This way, they can mix with others and gain exposure beyond their usual environment,” she said.
