KUCHING: Artificial intelligence (AI), remote sensing, data analytics and smart systems are expected to play an increasingly important role in how environmental issues are understood and managed.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said emerging technologies could provide new tools for monitoring natural resources, tracking environmental changes and improving decision-making.

“We are entering a period in which digital technology, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, data analytics and smart systems will increasingly influence how we understand and manage the environment,” he said.

His speech was read out by Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh at the Women in Environment 2026 Symposium at Grand Margherita Hotel here on Tuesday (Aug 18).

Abang Johari pointed out that technology could be applied across different aspects of environmental management, including monitoring forests and understanding changes in oceans.

He said it could also be used to track emissions, help industries utilise resources more efficiently and assist governments in making better decisions, while digital technology could help environmental messages reach millions of people.

“But technology is only a tool. What matters is how we use it. Technology must serve people. And technology must serve the planet,” he said.

Abang Johari also linked technological development with the need to prepare the next generation to take responsibility for future environmental challenges.

He said environmental challenges being addressed today would continue long after many of the present generation had left their positions.

“The next generation will inherit both the solutions we create and the problems we fail to solve. Therefore, we have the responsibility to equip young people with the knowledge, technology, confidence and opportunities required to lead,” he said.

The Premier said Sarawak had an opportunity to demonstrate that a resource-rich state could continue developing while becoming more sustainable.

“We can build industries while protecting nature. We can embrace new technologies while respecting traditional knowledge.

“We can create economic opportunities while ensuring that communities are not left behind,” he said.

Abang Johari also called on different sectors to contribute according to their respective roles, including scientists communicating their knowledge and educators inspiring young people.
